Speaker 1:

Welcome to Elementary and I'm your host, jacqueline Watson, today. My guest is simply awesome, and if you miss the show, you need to watch the replay, because you absolutely will love the show. My guest is I'm so super excited to interview this guest of mine and she'll ask to join. Hi, perfect, so I hope you're having a and so we'll get started.

Speaker 2:

Let introduce yourself in your instagram handle yeah, my name is bailey mcnamara and that's my instagram handle um bailey mcnamara. Um, I am an online personal trainer and a mom, and I primarily work with millennial moms perfect right.

Speaker 1:

So for all of you watching, if you have any questions, please feel free to drop it in the question icon or in the comments. We'll try and follow along. I'll follow along. Bailey's going to tell us all about her and how she can help us. So tell us a little bit about your program, about yourself.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah. So my program, like I, work with millennial moms and our focus is on building strength, building muscle and losing weight, right. So basically, like with my programming, we focus on nutrition, we focus on fitness, we focus on habits. As millennials, you know, we grew up in a really toxic time when it comes to dieting, nutrition. So with my program, we're basically working to reframe that and rebuild a lot of those habits that kind of were installed at us at a young age through diet, culture, through media and just really focusing on not so much losing weight. At the end of the day, obviously that is a goal, but I like to reframe it as we're focusing on building strength and through that you will get to your goals of weight loss or toning or, you know, leading up whatever it is you're looking for.

Speaker 1:

So did you have some? Like, how did you arrive to do this? Like, how did you get here?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so I've always actually been in the health and fitness space. Um, it's what I went to school for. I went to, um, uh, fleming College in Peterborough for fitness and health promotion, and I have just always been in the health and fitness space. I've worked at weight loss clinics. Um, most of my career before this was with big box gyms. I ran a gym for six years, but when I became a mom, I realized there was such a huge shift. There's such a huge shift in your body and your mind and your priorities. So I knew, once I became a mom, that this was really where my passion was. It was going to be, you know, helping moms start to rebuild their bodies, you know, reprioritize themselves. So I wanted to use my, you know, years of experience and knowledge and be able to help other moms get back into things, because it's so easy to just put yourself on the back burner once you become a mom. So I work with women, with moms, to reprioritize themselves.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing. So we already have someone saying so. Thank you, jess. Hi, jess, the great shout out she says well, just here to say I hired Bailey and her approach is a game changer, has been a game changer. So I mean that's pretty amazing. So thank you for that, because for all of you who are on the show and for all of you who are looking for someone who is going to take this to the next level, you know you need to keep watching because this is going to get exciting. So you know, you're quite right, moms do feel overwhelmed, right? You have a baby, your body changes so drastically and then the baby is five, six, seven, eight and keeps going.

Speaker 1:

And not everybody shrinks back right Like people think they pop the baby out and it's gone, and that can be quite quite a shock on its own, just to feel that way. So you know, it's nice to hear that you're prior to rising, but how do you, how do you help moms that are feeling overwhelmed? Juggling family, juggling a career? And it's not just a baby, right. You're also dealing with moms that may be. You know working and stuff. How do you like help them prioritize fitness self-care?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's a great question and, honestly, like that is absolutely the key piece of my methodology, right? So together we work to find the time, because at the end of the day, you might be able to find the time, but you can definitely make the time once you start prioritizing yourself again. So not only that, because I take such a personal approach to every single person when it comes to programming we take the time to find a schedule, so we want to make sure that we create a schedule and so, with that being said, like some of my clients, they have a 30 minute at home workout, and then some of my clients, they have a 30 minute at home workout, and then some of my clients, they can fit in the hour to go to the gym. Not everyone can do that, so we make sure that, because everyone's different, your program is going to be different. So, if you can only get to the gym for 30 minutes at home that's what we're here for Maybe you just have a home gym. If you can only do 30 minutes, we're going to do that. If you can only do 30 minutes, we're going to do that. If you can do an hour, we're going to do that.

Speaker 2:

So, when we make sure that, in a perfect world, if you can get three workouts a day, if you are on a weight loss journey, that's what I or, sorry, three workouts a week. But we make the time and some of my clients, you know they work out Tuesday, thursday, saturday. Some it's Monday, wednesday, friday. So at the end of the day, the program that you're going to stick to and to make sure that you know your program is not adding more stress and it's not adding, you know that overwhelm. We're going to make sure that it works for you. So maybe that means getting up a little bit earlier, maybe that means, you know, skipping your Netflix show at the end of the day to fit in a workout.

Speaker 2:

Maybe some of my clients actually can go, you know, get their 30 minutes on their lunch period. So we basically like work together to make sure that you can fit it in and it just sometimes takes a little bit of rescheduling things. But when you work with a coach and you have that level of accountability, it makes it a lot easier, because it's so easy to say I'll just get my workout today. But when you have someone that's checking in on you and you have a community that's supporting you. It makes it a lot harder. Almost you know to be like oh, I know my coach is gonna see if I don't work out. So once you have that level of accountability, it makes it a lot easier.

Speaker 1:

So what do you think is the biggest mistake people make with? Just weight loss, just staying healthy. Forget about weight loss, it's about staying healthy, right yeah?

Speaker 2:

Honestly, I think most moms, most people, get into that all or nothing mentality. So making too many changes too fast usually doesn't work, or they don't, they're not going to stick to it, right? So just to give up when you're frustrated or you're disappointed, you know. I think that either, when it comes to weight loss, you don't have to make these big changes. What you want to do is take one change at a time. Changes what you want to do is take one change at a time.

Speaker 2:

So a lot of women think that, you know, barring medical reasons, a lot of women think, oh, if I, you know, don't hit my goal if I don't get my three workouts in, you know, weight loss just isn't for me when that's not the case, right? So instead of making these huge changes or setting these unrealistic timelines, you know you have to set micro shifts, and that's a big part of my approach when it comes to weight loss is we focus on micro shifts. So maybe that's just adding in a workout, Maybe that's just. Maybe for some people that's just I'm going to make meals at home, maybe that's I'm going to get some more steps, so you don't have to make all these huge changes all at home. Maybe that's I'm going to get some more steps, so you don't have to make all these huge changes all at once.

Speaker 2:

I see, a lot of the time, you know, people are like I'm gonna, you know, work out and I'm gonna go for runs and I'm gonna meal prep and all these things and it just it creates too much overwhelm when, as a busy mom or as a busy human, we already have enough overwhelm. So what I like to do is set a timeline that makes sense and then set one or two habits that you want to shift at the beginning. So maybe that is just getting more steps, maybe that's just making meals at home and then, once you have that habit down, add from there, so that way it's not just something else to be overwhelmed or stressed about.

Speaker 1:

You know, I feel like you know, when it comes down to, I guess you know people say, oh, you know, it's all about exercise, it's all about fit, it's about but it really goes hand in hand right, like eating and exercise, like you know, it's kind of like a little package, right? People think, no, I'm just going to eat everything and then I'll go work out, and or I'm not going to eat, but then I'll go work out, Like you know what. I mean, I think it kind of goes hand in hand right.

Speaker 2:

Really, yeah yeah. There's a lot of things I think that people don't think about when it comes to weight loss. A lot of the time, you know it's nutrition it's fitness, but it's also other things, like it's stress, sleep, recovery, like there's so many other factors that come into play. Right, a lot of these things can cause inflammation and you might see you know that show up on a scale right. So we have to make sure that we have all these pieces that set us up for success.

Speaker 1:

I don't know Absolutely Now you know, just checking in, like starting with moms, right, moms can sometimes have some unlost weight, right? Or it just keeps hanging around and then you know, like what you know after they have kids. I think it starts there. But I think it starts because your body changes so much and you're at a different age and keep getting older, unfortunately. What like, what sort of approach or what, what can you do or how does your program help with that piece?

Speaker 2:

um. So I think a lot of the time, like when it comes to moms, like when you think about you know your body changing, um, a lot of the time I think a big part of it is comes back to simply not prioritizing themselves, right? So, like a lot of moms struggle after having kids, is that piece just simply stopping to, stopping remembering to, to prioritize themselves? So that could be like forgetting to eat. You know I hear a lot, oh, I don't have time to work out. Or you know I have broken sleep. Or you know they're so tired all the time so we're drinking a ton of coffee, forgetting about water, not taking care of these stress levels. So all these things are just emphasizing how important it is to start prioritizing yourself. So we focus on this and I think it's important to remember like self self care isn't selfish, and when we have that first mindset shift, that's the first thing that we need to work on.

Speaker 2:

So in my program the women in my program, that's the first thing that we we start with. We start prioritizing ourself and incorporating the strength training piece, because for me, that is the first step, the strength training is the first step and what that is is making sure that you are prioritizing yourself by taking care of your body, right, you're going to start feeling better and I really believe that, like, movement is medicine, right? So we know for a fact that it helps with anxiety, it boosts confidence, it boosts self-esteem, reduces stress, like just to name a few things. And then, on top of that, you know, with motherhood, unfortunately, it can kind of be a lonely place, right. So when we think of that, the struggle between you know, not prioritizing ourselves, feeling like we're alone in this most moms I work with you know their kids are at an age where they're doing sports, they're going back to school, you know.

Speaker 2:

So, between work and kids, getting the kids ready for school, after school sports, you know we start to lose our identity in motherhood and lose that social connection. So a big piece of my program that I added is the community aspect too. So on top of, you know, having a strength training program, you also have a community of women that are like going through the same thing and I think that's really useful um, because you realize, you know you're not alone in this, um, and you know it's also motivating to have other people there as well.

Speaker 1:

No, absolutely Absolutely. So how do you like motivate moms that think they don't have time? How do you motivate them to really kind of just help them? See that, just with a little bit of something, yeah, yeah, I think someone's helping something, yeah, um, yeah, um, I think someone's helping, I guess. Uh, yeah, I'll let you answer it.

Speaker 2:

Then I'll read Jess's um yeah um, I, when it comes to like to making time, I think a big thing is my favorite thing to do um, that actually I do and I encourage all my clients to do is I like to, honestly, I like to sit down on Sunday, go through my schedule and I plug in what I know I can do. So some days that's, you know, five days a week at 5am, and then some days that's maybe three days a week at noon. So everyone's schedule is going to be different, but I guarantee you that you can find at least 30 minutes. And then when you work with me, like I said, it's all personalized. So if I know someone can only do 30 minutes you are going to get a good, solid strength training program that is going to help you build muscle, lose fat, and you're going to be able to do it in 30 minutes. The reason why that's possible is because my program focuses on knowledge, intensity and consistency.

Speaker 2:

So, coming back to finding time, not to go too much off topic, you just have to realize that you do have the time, schedule it in as an appointment and that way you're going to commit to it, just like you would schedule, like my daughter has classes that she does Monday and Wednesday at four o'clock. You will schedule your time too, so maybe that means going to bed 30 minutes earlier so you can get up 30 minutes earlier, right, because at the end of the day, you do have to make time and you can. You can do it. It's just where your priorities lie, but you can watch a 30-minute episode of you know, whatever you're binging on netflix. You can do that while you're working out. You know what I mean yeah, no, absolutely.

Speaker 1:

It's all about priorities right and I think I think once you kind of focus in, I mean most people, once they have a little bit of help and they focus in, then they make time because then they enjoy it right, absolutely.

Speaker 2:

And you'll find right away. Like most of the women right away are like oh, I have more energy. Like you will get the benefits right away and you'll want to do it more will get the benefits right away and you'll want to do it more.

Speaker 1:

It's been. Um, jess says it's been so nice to share recipes or just struggles with other people going through their own journey. I'm sure it is right, because it definitely helps you. Just like keep going Right. Um, yeah, it can get lonely actually, even though you have a house full of kids. It can get lonely. Actually, even though you have a house full of kids, it can still get lonely trying to be a super mom. So being a mom means dealing with unexpected chaos. So how does what you do help moms stay on track even when life gets crazy? Or how do you stay on track even though life gets crazy?

Speaker 2:

That's a great question. I think like a big thing comes down to that accountability and consistency. So accountability is like a key piece of my program and it's the absolute foundation of my program. I would say my program is very high touch, so when you're in it, you have daily access to me, you have daily access to the group and we have weekly check-ins. You have monthly Zoom calls. So there is a big piece of accountability Zoom calls so there is a big piece of accountability.

Speaker 2:

When it comes to me personally, I think like the biggest thing is realizing that you can only do so much and that's okay too. So if you are on track with your workouts, but maybe your nutrition was off, like that's still a win to me. Because if the old version of you would, if something you know, with that all or nothing mentality comes crumbling down and then you're just like forget it, I'm just going to start everything on Monday or January, whatever that looks like right. So it's realizing that you can do whatever your best is in that moment. So maybe that's not whatever your best is in that moment, so maybe that's not you know 100%, but maybe you're having more weeks that are 80% than you normally would, and then that's a win, that's staying on track, right. So I think that is a big piece. For me is okay if I'm at 80%, that's okay, because that's what I had today, so maybe that's getting a workout in, whatever that looks like. So I think that's a big thing.

Speaker 1:

Is, even if you fall off track, that's okay too so with with some of the moms you've been working with or some of the people you're working with, you know what kind of transformations have you seen? I've seen your Instagram, so I know those results. Yeah, so I'm just asking you. So everyone else watching, yeah?

Speaker 2:

um, I've had amazing results, like with my clients. Um, I think, like, obviously, like there's weight loss results. Like you, you can see that, you can go through my instagram and you can see, you know, the women that have lost weight on the program. But for me, like um, it's all the things that you don't see, like, all the things that I necessarily, I don't necessarily share, um, the other day, one of my clients sent me all her new work outfits and she looks amazing, absolutely. But it's the confidence, yeah, it's the absolute confidence that I see with women. You know, sending me pictures of them in a crop top that they normally wouldn't wear, or, you know, being in like a little black dress where they just absolutely look amazing. But it's the fact that that's something that the old them wouldn't do. They would be still hiding in their clothes where now they feel proud. So there's that piece, there's the confidence, there's the confidence, you know, in their clothes.

Speaker 1:

There's the confidence at the gym where most of the time, maybe they would just hang out on the cardio equipment not really knowing what to do.

Speaker 2:

But now they can walk into the gym, they can lift the heavy weights. They don't have to, you know, stay back in, you know the aerobics room and not really know what to do. They know what to do. They have the knowledge of what to do when they enter the gym and realize they're allowed to be there, which is amazing. Because, being in the gym industry, I get so passionate about this, because I just I love women, like feeling empowered and feeling good and, being in the gym industry for so long, I've just seen so many women be intimidated by strength training. So working with women and helping them feel like they can go to the gym, they can lift the heavy weights, they're allowed to be there, is amazing. So that's like that's a big transformation that I see.

Speaker 2:

Another one that I really love is the knowledge when it comes to what to eat for their bodies, because so often, as you know millennials, we're told not to eat. You know a lot. You know not to eat a lot to lose weight. I know for the longest time there was like this 1200 calories was like a thing and it's like no, you need food Like this is good for you. You have to eat, especially if you are, you know, working out. You need to feel your body. So having women and moms know what to eat to feel good, to feel themselves, and then being able to share that with their families and with their kids and with their husbands, is amazing too like because that's a lot of information that we didn't have growing up, because there was such a mix of information out there around nutrition.

Speaker 2:

So um being confident, you know, in their clothes at the gym and in the kitchen is just like amazing to me and such a useful transformation.

Speaker 1:

Oh, absolutely, like women themselves can be quite mean to women. So it's kind of nice, you know, to have to feel that confidence, especially when you go to a gym, right? Because, like, you're going in and you're not quite where you want to be and you feel uncomfortable because you know, even if people are not looking at you, you be and you feel uncomfortable because you know, even if people are not looking at you, you think they're looking at you right?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, absolutely, Absolutely. So it makes a big difference. And the confidence piece is amazing because you know it just makes people just want to do something, you know. So what advice would you give moms that feel guilty about taking time for themselves? Uh, to focus on fitness and well-being?

Speaker 2:

yeah, yeah, um, you know, I think with I hear this a lot and we kind of we kind of touched on this, you know, earlier. It's like self-care. Self-care is literally never selfish. Prioritizing yourself empowers you to give more right. So not only do you feel better, but you become more patient, you become more calm. You know like, how often do you like get alone time throughout the day, you know you're at work, you're probably surrounded by people there. You come home, you're surrounded by people in your house, so you only have a certain amount of time until your battery is drained.

Speaker 1:

So if you're, able to.

Speaker 2:

I know this happens to me. Like you know, you're surrounded by your kids 24 seven, or at work 24 seven, whatever. So you're allowed to take that one hour so that you can give yourself, or give yourself fully to everyone else. For the other 12, 16 hours you're awake, right. So, between home and work and everything like that, like, you're allowed to do that Because not only do you need to, you know, fill your cup up, but it just makes you a better person all around to take that time for yourself because you need it. You can't be on 24 seven, it's impossible, or you could, but eventually you would, you know, you would, you would, you would drain, right. So on top of that, I think, like as moms, you also set the tone for your household. So so often it comes from the top. So when I see a lot of the time, when I see moms and wives, working out and eating healthy.

Speaker 2:

It starts a trend in the household too. You know their husbands see it, their kids see it and they start asking questions about it and getting involved too. So, like when I work out, my daughter will come down, she'll do her little exercises or she'll set up an obstacle course. She'll run around, right? I had a client who used to turn her Friday date nights into gym date nights. So it's nice to see like husbands getting involved if that's something you know that works too. So like it's, I just think it's awesome Because there's so many things that are helpful about it when it comes to adding in like a healthy routine and it's friends. You feel good about yourself and your family gets involved and they feel good too.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, absolutely. I'm going to bring it back to you for a second. I mean, I've seen your Instagram posts. I think you're a beast, but you know, I'm sure you get you have your own challenges and how do you keep everyone together? Your, you know your business, your clients and you know how do you keep it all together.

Speaker 2:

I mean, I don't always right, Like I don't always, and I think that's all part of the process. It's like learning to manage the ebbs and flows with gratitude and compassion and realizing, you know, not every day, not every week, not every month is going to go. You know, as much as you want it to, it's not going to be perfect and I love that reflection. When it comes to the days that aren't perfect, it's like, okay, how could I maybe have been better? Or what did I learn from this? And that's something that I use with my clients too. When they, you know, shoot me a message and they're like, oh, I'm off track. I'm like, okay, well, if this happens again, like what would you do differently? Because that's part of it. It's like it's it's losing and getting away from that all or nothing mindset and realizing, okay, I can just get back on track and that's okay, because life happens. Right, you're gonna get sick. I just went through, you know, a round of lice like my daughter was home forever and it's like okay, life happens, that's okay.

Speaker 2:

Especially as a mom, you know you're gonna have nights of of broken sleep and kids get sick, and so you know. I think like, as millennials, we're naturally perfectionists, and then entering motherhood highlights that fact about us, unfortunately. So, just like I tell my clients, it's like okay, we're going to reflect, realign and restart and that's okay.

Speaker 2:

Because that's what happens right so I think that's a big thing is like you don't have to keep everything together all the time, but it's making the best you can out of what you have at that time and being gentle with yourself and realizing that's okay.

Speaker 1:

I mean, that was such an amazing answer, thank you. You know most people will say, oh well, but no, no, that was such an amazing answer. Thank you for that. You know most people will say, oh well, but no, no, that was such an amazing answer. It was so down to earth. I mean, I saw your post about the life and I thought that's nice. She's posting that because I'm sure other people are going through the same thing. You know you're saying, hey, I have this issue, man.

Speaker 1:

And everyone knows what it takes to get rid of them.

Speaker 2:

But then you're saying hey, I have this issue, man, and everyone knows what it takes to get rid of them.

Speaker 1:

But then you have other people who are probably saying, oh my goodness, I would not post that, but it's great because it just makes you like human, yeah, and have these struggles and it's this facade and pretending you know every day is just perfect.

Speaker 2:

No so it's amazing.

Speaker 1:

Thank you for that. So I mean, typically before we wrap up, I want to ask and this is kind of the time where, if you had a promo going on or something, I'm not- you know, I don't need to do a promo. Normally I ask if you have something you want to share, something I haven't touched on that you may want to cover as well. Yeah, it's a good time.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely yeah. I just want to say too, like, thank you so much for having me here. Like this has been so much fun. Like I love chit chatting about all this. It's, hands down, one of my favorite things to talk about and, um, I am, this is actually like literally perfect timing. Um is, and this was actually it's funny because you asked me like two weeks ago and I just I picked a date because it was like the second week after school. I was like that should be good, but then I actually had this promo coming and I was like this is perfect timing.

Speaker 2:

Um, I'm running an exclusive offer right now that I don't ever really do and it's a perfect time to because it's going to take you right into and through the holidays. It's my signature one on one program. So if you have a look at my page, you can see my offers, you can check out my website, all that you. So you know what's included, but it's actually condensed into a three month offer and right now you get everything that's included in my normal one to one offer. So fitness, nutrition, habit coaching, all that stuff, my app, everything in three months.

Speaker 2:

So it's really nice to, because we all know that. You know we just kind of accept that. Oh, you know, it's the holidays, I'm just gonna put on some holiday weight and start in January. Well, now you don't have to struggle with you know feelings that normally come with holiday and holiday food, and you're going to get that accountability all over the holidays. So right now it's actually $150 off my normal pricing and it's a three month program, which I don't normally do. Most of my programs are six, nine or 12 months, so it's like a little mini offer, which is perfect with the holidays around the corner.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, no, it helps people get kind of right into it so that when January comes they don't have to worry about. I mean, really, you know, all of this comes down to just being on top of stuff, right, being a little more organized. You know, I've noticed myself um the days that I I plan out what I'm going to eat or what I'm going to cook.

Speaker 2:

It's so much easier.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and then you know what you're putting in your food right.

Speaker 1:

Like I'm not a eat out kind of person I can't go out because I have to out kind of person again to go out because I have to take clients out to lunch every so often. But you know, it's um, I, um, I kind of, at the end of the day, I like to make my own food because then I know what I'm putting in it and then I can control. You know what goes in right and yeah, yeah and um, and that's perfect. I want to thank you for taking the time to chat with me today. It was amazing.

Speaker 1:

I'd love to do this again in the new year because you know people will be looking for maybe a new start. I think you can start anytime you want, anytime you're ready can be the time you start right.
